Overview


JOSÉ ÁLVAREZ CUBERO (1768 – 1827)
Born in Priego de Cordoba where he finished his first studies. Between 1791 and 1794, he assisted to the academics in Cordoba, Granada and Madrid, where he finally got accepted to Real Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. In July of 1799, he received a scholarship of the Royal House to continue his studies in Paris.  In 1805 he has moved to Rome, where he married. For following 20 years Alvarez Cubero he was an assistant to Canova and exiled sculptor, of the court of King Carlos V of Spain. In 1825 he returned to Spain where he continued his career as an artist.

The sculpture depicts with historical precision the hero with drawn Tizona sword and shield adorned with a widespread dragon on his horse Babieca, quiet and  presto to submit to orders of Castillian “Martillo” (“the Hammer”).
